Aloha! In late October I stumbled on Expedia.com, and found an UNBEATABLE price for a 15-day cruise to Hawaii for the first two weeks of December. Ok, I didn’t “stumble” on the website…I knew it was time for a vacation. While 15 days is not normal for us (the longest we have ever been away is 7 days), everything fell into place and within 24 hours we had the cruise booked. Woo-hoo!
This was my fourth cruise (Casey’s third), and will definitely not be our last. Although it was a 15 day cruise, we were only in 5 different Hawaii ports, and spent 9 days at sea to get there and back from Los Angeles. The days at sea were relaxing, yet very bumpy. The ship was rocking the entire time we were at sea due to very high winds and rain storms.
The five days in Hawaii were busy, busy, busy since Casey and I wanted to see everything we could. Going to four different islands in five days was an amazing experience! We went to Hilo, Maui, Honolulu, Kauai, and Kona.
Our first stop was Hilo, Hawaii; which is on the big island. Casey and I rented a car and drove ourselves to Volcanoes National Park. We were able to see a great variety of the volcanoes, steam vents, dried lava, and lava tunnels. It’s amazing how the area is “jungle-like” in some areas and “desert-like” on others that have been affected by the volcanoes and lava flows.
The second stop was Maui, Hawaii. This was our favorite island! Once again, we rented a car and drove the “Road to Hana” – a 6 hour sightseeing drive along the perimeter of the island that showcases the best scenery I have ever seen! As we drove, there was the beach on one side, and lush-greenery on the other. Words cannot describe how breathtaking the views were.
After the Road to Hana, we still had time before we have to get back to the ship, so we stopped and got some gelato (yummy!) and drove up the coast to Lahaina, Hawaii to watch the sunset.
